General information:
In February 2004 I bought an old house in the countryside, in a beautiful valley in Møre og Romsdal, with a breath-taking view, on the sunny side of the valley. I will eventually open a Bed & Breakfast here, but need to do quite a bit of renovation work first. I have also started to build a new structure, a little cabin, with parking on the roof. Myself, the owner, I'm an architect by education. I built a house in Oslo in 1991 where I have been running a B&B for 14 years.
Visitors through the years 2004-2007
The summer 2004, Sefano, a 21 year old student from Italy, came to stay here for 4 weeks. We built the scafolding around the house, made some urgent repairs of the roof before the winter. We torned down some walls inside the house and built little platforms outside; one for our afternoon coffee and one platform for the saw and other tools. We also made bird-houses, went for walks in the forest, blue-berry picking, fishing in the fjord etc.
The summer 2005 I had 6 visitors, each stayed from two to four weeks; Romain, 21 years, from France, Danila, 18 yrs, from Russia/Germany, Kim & Dave, 38/35, from Texas, USA and Liz & Dee, age 59 and 70, also from USA. We mounted a new roof and scraped and painted walls of the outhouse. We cut lots of firewood for the coming winters. We also fixed up a shower room in the neighbor's barn, so finally we've got access to an indoor shower. Our outdoor shower ended up as a pile of wood after a storm one night.
Danila made me a big wooden box for drying and storing little firewood pieces and Kim found an old bicycle wheel in the outhouse which she made into a rack for hanging pots and pans over the kitchen stove.
We went blueberry- and mushroom picking, Danila was the mushroom expert, and both Romain and Dave went berserk in the blueberry field, as Dave stated; 'This is blueberry-heaven'. And we went fishing; Our best fishing trip gave us 20 small fishes.
Visiting in 2006 was Alex, 21 yrs, from USA who cut concreet blocks and was mostly seen in a cloud of dust for 10 days. JC, a French student, also 21 yrs., was staying for three weeks, building a new and no so popular out-door-shower with a panorama view, he also participated in building a real arch the old fashion way cutting and shaping concrete blocks. Martine from Belium, 34 yrs, painted the outhouse and made a garden for vegetables. Deborah, 32 yrs. from USA, stayed one week and we did masonrywork, fixing siding on the outhouse and we did a lot of nice cooking.
In 2007 two French students were visiting, Cedric and Cyril, both 21 yrs. We stayed some weeks in Oslo and did some work on my house there before we went to Surnadal and worked on the structure there.
Meals and free time
The meals in Surnadal has been quite elaborate with everything from Caribian quesadilla, Russian apple cake, French choclate pastery, American blueberry-pie, to Norwegian dishes like wale-beaf, blood pudding, fish pudding, sour-cream porridge etc. All bring some ideas from their home country and traditional Norwegian dishes has to be tested.
There are many possibilities for outdoorsy activities here. Some of the guests have joined hikes in the mountains together with the locals. Two bikes are available to use, either for thips over the hills or along the fjord.
We work normally 5 days per week and have 2 days off. Every summer we have done one trip to the ocean, daytrip or staying over night. There we go fishing and make a nice fish-dinner afterwards - while watching the sunset.
2008 - 2009:
Again I would like to invite people to a free stay for free work, preferable a minimum of two weeks. In 2008 or 2009, the best time will be in the fall.
There is always a variety of tasks to do and fairly easy to find something suitable for each persons level of handicraft. Though to make it function having unskilled person on a construction site it is important that the candidates consider themselves as relatively skilled in practical work.
Location:
The house is situated in Surnadal, a valley between the cities Trondheim and Kristiansund.
